Colorado RV Camping – La Junta

Free Colorado RV camping is available throughout the Comanche National Grassland. This area of southeastern Colorado is home to Antelope, Coyote, Fox, 270 species of birds, rattlesnakes, and more. This area encompasses parts of Pinion Canyon, and is home to the largest dinosaur track site in North America at Picketwire Canyon. Vogel Canyon offers Indian petroglyphs as well in the area.

Comanche National Grassland

We spent two weeks RV camping in the Comanche National Grassland. The free RV camping location is large enough for any size RV, and is suitable for group camping as well. If great scenery, solitude, and 23 miles to the nearest town appeal to you, we recommend this free RV camping location. The turnoff from Hwy 109 is well marked as “Picketwire Canyon & Vogel Canyon”. The road is good gravel when dry, but a clay roadbase mixture makes these roads “greasy” when wet. Roads dry quickly after even the heavyest rainstorms.

The following pictures give only a glimpse of this wide open country.
